Light Brown M&M

So somehow last night Ian and I got to talking about M&M's. I asked him if remembered the light brown one that they used to have in the 80's. And of course he said no (he likes to be opposite of me). So, of course I know that I am right and jet out on my journey to completely prove him wrong. I know this is going to be easy because I am 100% confident in my m&m trivia.

So we go to wikipedia, which is the final word in all google searches and no where on there does it talk about light brown, every other color but not the one I need. SERIOUSY!!! I proceed to continue searching, nothing ...except for a few posts of people who also insist that there was a light brown m&m. But come on, that doesn't help me, I need hard core proof. So,I have the answer, Google images..there is bound to be a photo of the m&m's. NOPE you guessed it. I can't find anything, but I know in my heart of hearts that they did exist. I perfectly remember thinking how dumb it was to have two browns, couldn't they pick a better, prettier color. Well by this time I am frustrated because I know I am right and don't want Ian to gloat when he is clearly wrong ( and PS I know more trivia about M&Ms than any human who is not employed by Mars should know).

FINALLY, FINALLY... I come across a picture that shows the candies that traveled to space. This package is completely beat up and not that clearly recognizible. Well, if you look carefully you can see light brown and dark brown!! I have won :) But really, that is all the proof there is about it.

Dude, I just had that conversation with my boss. He doesn't seem to remember the light brown ones either. But I, like you, am 100% sure that they existed. Not in the manner of Elvis sightings and such, but they were real. It's funny because that is how I came across your post. I was googling it to prove it to him and found your pic that you searched to find.

I thought the light brown M&M's were cool. It was a very "chocolatey" color. Sad... Some people don't even remember the vote for the "new" M&M color campaign when the winner was blue.

Kind of late here, but the light brown ones were my favorite. While I like the blue ones, I was upset that they replaced the tan colored ones. I was thinking the "new color" would be an addition, rather than a replacement.

Maybe someday they will have a nostalgia edition and bring the tan ones back for people like us.

I absolutely remember light brown m&ms. Just like everyone else, i was in an argument trying to prove the existence of the light brown m&m. I found them in a nostalgic candy store a few years back up in vermont. Does anyone remember when they had the gray m&m, i think it was some sort of promotion to find the gray one. anyway, thanks for having the picture of those candies! (our next topic was remember when mcdonald's came in Styrofoam?) :)

light brown were my favorite too. your blog is now the definitive site for proof. another thing i like about the picture is that it is before the red were taken out. the red were taken out for awhile b/c they could kill you.

Holla from NYC-- we were wondering too.
Next question: did you vote for blue, purple, or pink back in the 90s?

I know this is way late on this post, but the light brown ones were my favorite color and I was crushed when they were eliminated. I know it was in the mid 90's, because a couple of years before my husband and I were married, light brown M&M's were a big part of the most romantic gift he ever gave me:

He knew I loved that color and that it was slated to be removed (in favor of the interloper blue - rrrrrrr). Over the course of several weeks he bought many large bags of M&Ms and picked out all the light brown ones. On my birthday, he presented me with a wire bale jar full of them.

I still have the jar, though I don't think I'd eat the M&Ms anymore! I should post a photo of it on Flickr as proof they existed....

The previous commenter should post a picture of your jar of light browns! They were my fave too. I also think it's weird that they are totally GONE, especially when you go to an M&Ms store and see the wall of all the different colors they make now -- why not include the light brown??

It's time to petition Mars to bring back the light brown M&M!

i am another fan of the light brown M&M's...if i remember right, for a while they were the rarest ones, along with the green... i had a strange mom: she would count out the M&M's by colors so that my bro, sis and i would get exactly the same number of each color...and she would eat the ones that were not evenly divisible by 3
i would save my light browns until last. i voted for purple, btw

Just came across this but this was on wikipedia:

"In 1995, Mars ran a promotion in which consumers were invited to vote on which of blue, pink, or purple would replace the tan M&M's. Blue was the winner, replacing tan in early 1995"

I was born in 1965 and growing up LOVED the tan and brown M&Ms.
I liked the other colors too - it was the whole package that worked. It was solid.
I swear the tan and brown M&Ms also tasted more chocolately; the other colors, had a slightly sharper flavor. It was the perfect balance.
Now with the tweeny marketing we have more "xtreme" colors, (too many blues, imho), and
I find the balance lost and the whole bag just slightly diminished.
Well, I guess I should be grateful they're not all Nickelodeon goo green. :)
Anyhow, all that's really needed is for Mars to add a brown and tan M&M package to the line.
That would be ....sweet.

So i found this blog and was like wow just had a convo with my mom about this and went to the m&m website and they say nothing about there light brown m&m in the history of it so going threw websites after finding this blog i found this yaaaaaaaaaaay for light brown m&m's

Red M&Ms were discontinued in 1976 because of a scare with a food dye called Red Dye #2 (which was not used in M&Ms). At that time the colors in the M&M pack were: Green, Orange, Yellow, Light Brown & Dark Brown. The Red M&M returned in 1985, at first as part of the Holiday color mix then in the regular mix
