Word to the Wise

If you ever have an oppurtunity to teach summer school....DON'T. I always forget how horrible it is and somehow get myself into it. It is absolute hell. So, always say no to summer school. No matter how much it is, it is definitely not worth it.

And since Ian mentioned that I update my blog rarely (even though it is more than his lately), I have decided to do a better job. Thanks Ian for the reminder that I need to update more often!

Power of Friday

Friday holds such a dear spot in my heart, but it also worries me a little that I live for Fridays. Starting first thing Monday, thoughts of Friday afternoon began to pop into my head. As the week continues, those thoughts become more and more frequent. I find myself asking others "Is it Friday yet?" I live for Fridays at 2:15 when my students walk out the door. Something about knowing I don't have to be responsible for 20 students well-being seems oh so relaxing. I love my job but I also love my "me" time.

Martin

So, as I was driving home this morning, I got an overwhelming sense of joy. I watched cars scurrying past me, in a hurry to get to their day of work. Meanwhile, I could drive slow and savor my time. Why...because of Martin (King, if you are wondering). Everyone around me was on their way to a productive work day. Except me, I was on my way home for a day of sleeping, reading, and movies. Which to me seems so much better! I am getting a smile across my face just thinking about it now!

The magic of teaching

Today is one of the days that I live for as an educator. In the education field we have acronyms for everything and of course this one is no exception. It is commonly know as S.D.. To those of you who are not in the education field this is known as a snow day!!

Nothing on earth beats a snow day and unfortunately teachers and kids are the only ones to get to enjoy this magical experience.

It starts as soon as these two groups of people hear the weather forecast. Whispers (we don't want to jinx it) of "will be at school tomorrow?" travel through the halls. Teachers secretly pray and kids do snow dances. All is crazy and of course we are a little superstitious. For example, we have to get our classrooms ready for the next day because if not we will have jinxed ourselves. And today's events were no different.

It started snowing yesterday around 6:00 p.m. which worried me because it was a little early. Educators want it to begin late because there is less of a chance of it getting cleared off in time. The processing began with a little call to Eden who looked up the radar and read the forecast and we speculated on whether of not we thought there would be school. All night, as I was out I was weighing the situation. "It is still snowing, but I am not sure there is enough snow". Of course I had to mention it to the person I was with at least five times, who of course could care less since they had to work regardless.

As I was driving home around 11:00 pm the roads were pretty crappy, but drivable. I had finally convinced myself that there would be school because there wasn't enough snow and it would be cleared by morning.

Fast forward to 5:00 am where my phone rang this morning. The sweet voice of my principal rang out, "Cara, no school today. Pass it on and you can go back to sleep." Which is exactly what I did. Called the next person on the phone tree and happily drifted back to sleep. Aaah the magic of teaching!
